What Is Ping (Latency)?
Ping is the time it takes for a small packet to travel from your device to a target and for the reply to come back; it is expressed in milliseconds (ms). If bandwidth is "how thick the pipe is", ping is "how long the water takes to travel through the pipe and back" — the two are different things. A 100 Mbps line can have high ping; a 10 Mbps line can have excellent ping.

How Does a Proxy Affect Latency?
A proxy adds a stop to your traffic: total latency = you→proxy + proxy→target. That is why you should pick the proxy location depending on the target is essential. When you are scraping a site in Turkey, Turkey proxy gives 10-30 ms; the same job over a US proxy can exceed 300 ms. If the target is in the US, the logic flips. Datacenter proxies, thanks to its datacenter backbone, offers the lowest latency of all the types.
How to Reduce High Ping
- Pick a proxy location that is geographically close to your target.
- On free addresses, congestion increases latency; from the list filter for the addresses tagged low latency.
- In rotating plans, set a region restriction (e.g. European exits only).
- Send time-sensitive jobs to datacenter and protected targets to residential; don't load every job onto a single plan.

01Are ping and speed tests the same thing?
No. Ping measures response time, a speed test measures bandwidth. Both should be weighed together when choosing a proxy.
02Why does my ping keep changing?
Network congestion, wireless signal quality and the load on intermediate routers all cause moment-to-moment fluctuation. Take at least 5-10 measurements to see the average.
03How do you measure ping through a proxy?
A classic ICMP ping does not pass through a proxy; proxy latency is measured by how long an HTTP request made through the proxy takes. Our Proxy Check tool reports this value.
