What Is a DNS Leak?
When you visit a domain, your browser first looks up its IP with a DNS query. Even when your web traffic goes through the proxy, Depending on the configuration, DNS queries can go straight to your own ISP's servers. In that case your ISP — and anyone with access to the DNS logs — can still see which sites you connect to. That is what a DNS leak is.
How Do You Spot a Leak?
If the DNS servers shown in the result belong to your own ISP (for example your operator's servers in Turkey), you have a leak despite using a proxy. If the servers match the proxy location or an independent DNS service, your configuration is correct.
How to Prevent DNS Leaks
- SOCKS5 + remote DNS: on SOCKS5 proxies domain name resolution can happen on the proxy server. In Firefox, tick "Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5".
- Independent DNS service: Move your system DNS off the ISP default to an independent provider (e.g. 1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9).
- DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH): If DoH is enabled in modern browsers, queries travel encrypted, which lowers both the leak risk and the surveillance risk.
- Per-application control: In automation tools, prefer the settings that resolve DNS through the proxy.

01Does an HTTP proxy prevent DNS leaks?
With an HTTP proxy the proxy resolves the domain name, so browser traffic produces no leak. The other applications on the system, however, keep using their own DNS.
02How serious a problem is a DNS leak?
Even if your IP stays hidden, a record of the domains you visit is still created. When you use a proxy for privacy, that means half the protection is wasted.
03Why doesn't the test show an ISP server when DoH is on?
DNS-over-HTTPS queries leave the browser encrypted and bypass the system DNS; this is the intended outcome.
