Technical Background: Which Headers Give You Away?

The anonymity class is determined by three HTTP headers the proxy forwards to the target:

• X-Forwarded-For: transparent proxies carry your real IP in this header — the most critical leak of all.
• Via: announces that the request passed through a proxy; it is usually present at the Anonymous level.
• Forwarded: the modern standard; depending on its contents it can carry both pieces of information.

Elite proxies pass none of these headers: the target site sees what looks like an ordinary direct connection. For the details, our anonymity levels article .

Which Level Is Enough, and When?

Access testing and learning: Any level will do. Personal privacy: Anonymous at minimum, preferably Elite. Data collection, account management and commercial work: Elite only — on protected sites, the mere fact that a proxy is visible is enough to get you blocked.
