How to Check a Proxy
You judge the health of a proxy address with three questions: does it connect, how fast does it answer, and does it really hide your identity? The tool above answers the first two questions automatically; for the third, set the proxy up in your browser and My IP Address page is all you need — the IP shown should be the proxy address.
If you would rather check by hand, a single terminal command is enough:
curl --proxy 185.93.68.14:8080 https://api.ipify.org — if the command returns the proxy IP, the address is working.
Proxy Not Working? Checklist
- Address format: Enter the IP and port in separate fields, or paste them in
ip:portmake sure you type it correctly on a single line, in this format. - Protocol compatibility: Entering a SOCKS5 address in the HTTP field is the most common mistake; don't mix up the protocol fields.
- Address lifetime: Free proxies are short-lived; an address that worked yesterday may be down today. From the up-to-date list get a new address.
- Authentication: On paid proxies the connection is refused unless you supply a username and password.
- Security software: Some antivirus and firewall software can block the proxy connection; add a rule for it.
What Is Proxy Latency?
Latency is the time it takes for your request to travel through the proxy to the target and for the response to come back to you; it is measured in milliseconds (ms). Under 80 ms is excellent, 80-150 ms is good, and above 250 ms counts as slow. Physical distance is the biggest factor: from Türkiye, 10-30 ms to a Türkiye proxy and 130-200 ms to a US proxy is typical. For detailed measurement, the ping test tool .
HTTP Proxy Test
In the HTTP test the tool sends a web request through the proxy and measures the response code. CONNECT support is tried separately; if it succeeds, the address can also be used on HTTPS sites. For the details of the HTTP protocol, our HTTP proxy page check it out.
SOCKS5 Proxy Test
A SOCKS5 test verifies the protocol's handshake step: the tool sends a SOCKS5 greeting to the server and waits for the reply. If the handshake succeeds, any kind of TCP traffic can pass through that address. Protocol details on our SOCKS5 page.
Frequently Asked Questions
01What does a "timeout" result mean?
The server did not respond within the time limit: the address may be down, the port wrong, or the server overloaded. This is the most common outcome with free addresses; try another one from the list.
02The proxy works but sites will not load — why?
The address may be up while the target site has blocked that IP. Test against a different site; if the problem persists, pick another proxy.
03Can I test proxies in bulk?
Yes. You can paste up to 500 rows you can paste them in; results stream in line by line as each test finishes. If your list is longer than 500 lines, the first 500 addresses are processed.
04What information does the test show?
Connection status, latency (ms), detected protocol, exit IP address, country and service provider, anonymity level (Elite / Anonymous / Transparent) and HTTPS (CONNECT) support. Every run is also logged; you can open earlier runs from the Test Log section at the bottom of the page.
