Online Game Proxy Guides

Game traffic mostly uses UDP, and a proxy does not work in every scenario. In this section we explain, game by game, which traffic can pass through a proxy, which cannot, and how latency is actually affected.

Topics covered in the game guides

01
Protocol realityWhether the game uses TCP or UDP, and which of the two a proxy can carry.
02
Regional serversWhat choosing a region means for matchmaking and for your account.
03
Latency impactThe real effect of that extra hop on ping — without the hype.
04
Where to configureConfiguration at the client, launcher, system-wide or router level.

Game traffic usually flows over low-latency UDP packets. A classic HTTP proxy cannot carry this traffic; SOCKS5 It can, when UDP ASSOCIATE is supported — but both the proxy server and the game client have to support it. That is why in many games the proxy only covers login, store, patch download and launcher traffic; in-match packets go out directly.

Each guide in this section covers a single game and starts by settling one question: which of that game's traffic can actually go through a proxy? It then works down through regional server access, launcher configuration, common connection errors and account security.

About latency

A proxy adds one more stop to your traffic. In most cases this stop increases. The only scenario in which latency drops is when the default route is markedly roundabout and the proxy exit happens to find a shorter path to the game server; that is the exception, not the rule. Do not buy a proxy on the claim that it will lower your ping.

The guides are also built on respect for game terms of service: bypassing region locks, abusing multiple accounts or defeating anti-cheat are out of scope.

Verify the protocol first

Before you try a proxy with a game, knowing which ports and protocols that game uses saves time. In TCP-based MMORPGs, SOCKS5 usually works without trouble; in UDP-based FPS and battle royale titles, the proxy mostly covers only the non-gameplay traffic.

For protocol differences, see SOCKS5 and HTTP proxy compared, and for latency measurement the ping test tool will do the job.

Frequently asked questions about game proxies

01Does a proxy lower ping in games?

As a general rule, no. A proxy adds an extra hop to your traffic, and that hop increases latency. An improvement is only possible if the default route is unusually roundabout and the proxy exit happens to offer a shorter path to the server; that is an exceptional case and has to be confirmed by measurement.

02Which proxy type is right for gaming?

UDP-capable SOCKS5 offers the broadest compatibility, but UDP support is required on both the server and the client side. An HTTP proxy carries only web-based requests (store, account pages, some launcher calls).

03The launcher uses the proxy but the game doesn't — why?

The launcher is usually an HTTP client that reads the system proxy setting, while the game client opens its own UDP socket directly. This split is normal and is the expected behavior in most games.

04Can I connect to another region's server with a proxy?

In some games the region is tied to the account, and changing your IP does not change it. Bypassing a region lock also breaks most games' terms of service. The guides explain each game's region behavior separately.

05Can using a proxy get my account banned?

Changing your IP is not in itself grounds for a penalty in most games, but a sudden location change can trigger security verification. Uses that breach the terms of service (bypassing region locks, multi-account abuse) increase the risk of sanctions.

06If I have high packet loss, is a proxy the fix?

Packet loss can originate in your local network, your ISP routing or the game server. First ping test to measure where the loss starts; a proxy does not carry the problem, it only changes the route — and the loss can be higher on the new route.
