What Should You Watch Out for When Buying a Proxy?

The price range in the proxy market is very wide: from a few hundred lira a month to tens of thousands. Part of that gap comes from genuine infrastructure quality, part of it merely from how the package is put together. To make the right decision, far more than the product's technical specifications, it is your own usage pattern that you need to clarify.

This article lists the questions you should answer before buying and the technical details you should ask the provider about.

Choosing the wrong type costs you more than choosing the wrong provider. Type first, provider second.

Understand the Pricing Model

There are three basic models, and the cost of the same job can differ many times over depending on which one you choose:

ModelHow you are chargedWho it suitsRisk
Per GBVolume of data transferredLow volume, high need for reliabilityUnexpectedly running out of quota
Per IPNumber of addresses rentedWork that requires a fixed identityIdle capacity
Per requestNumber of successful requestsAPI-like usageAmbiguity in how a failed request is defined
Do the math

Price the same job under both models. A job that generates 200 GB of traffic a month can be very expensive on a GB-based model while being far cheaper on a fixed-IP package with unlimited traffic. To estimate your consumption, see our bandwidth calculation article .

Technical Questions to Ask the Provider

If you cannot find the answers to these questions on the sales page, request them in writing through the support channel. A written answer gives you something to rely on in any later dispute.

Use the Trial Period Properly

Most providers offer a short or volume-limited trial. Do not spend that time simply checking whether it works; test it with your own real targets instead.

01

Use your real targets

Every proxy works on generic test sites. The real question is what happens on your target.

02

Measure the success rate

Send 200–500 requests and record the 2xx rate, the CAPTCHA rate and the median latency.

03

Check pool repetition

Count how many different exit IPs you see across requests made without a session key.

04

Test the quality of support

Ask a technical question. The response time and its content show you what to expect when something goes wrong.

We explain the step-by-step testing method in our trial version testing guide in detail. For bulk testing our proxy checker tool you can use.

Hidden Costs

A package that looks cheap can end up costing more than an expensive one because of a high failure rate. Make the comparison on the basis of "cost per successful request".

Contract and Refund Terms

  • Refund window: How many hours/days, and under what conditions? Does traffic already used reduce the refund?
  • Quota rollover: Do unused GB carry over to the next month?
  • Auto-renewal: How is cancellation done, and how much notice is required?
  • Price increases: Is the price fixed on renewal, or does the contract contain an escalation clause?
  • Fair use: What is the written cap on "unlimited" packages?
  • Account suspension: In which cases is access cut off, and is any warning given beforehand?
Warning

Avoid sellers who cannot be reached after payment, who operate only through a messaging app and who will not disclose their corporate identity. Work with providers who can issue invoices and whose contact details can be verified.

Why Is Support Quality as Important as Price?

In proxy operations, problems are technical and time-critical. The difference between a provider that answers "my IP block is blocked, can I get a new one?" in 20 minutes and one that answers two days later creates a cost far greater than the difference in monthly fees.

The test is simple: before you buy, ask a technical question — for example, "once the sticky session duration is exceeded, can the same key be reused?" The speed and depth of the answer show you the real quality of support.

Does It Make Sense to Start with Free?

At the learning and prototype stage, absolutely. Free addresses are enough to validate your setup, your code integration and your logic. Our free proxy list can be used for exactly this purpose. For production work, however, it is not suitable because of instability, low speed and shared reputation; the differences are set out in our free vs paid comparison in detail.

Decision Matrix

The top-right corner is not always "the best" — only the most expensive. Whichever option your target's level of protection calls for is the right one.

Summary

Buying the right proxy starts not with knowing the product but with knowing your own usage pattern. Decide on the type, price the model against your own volume, spend the trial on your real targets, and read the refund, quota rollover and fair use clauses in the contract. Measuring total cost "per successful request" reveals whether packages that look cheap are in fact expensive. For a product comparison, residential, ISP, mobile and datacenter pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Which proxy type is right for me?

Your target's level of protection decides it. Datacenter works for easy targets, ISP for mid-level ones, residential for strict protection, and mobile proxies for the toughest platforms. The most reliable method is to start with a small trial and measure the success rate.

02Should I buy a GB-based or an IP-based package?

Estimate your monthly data volume and price both models. For high-volume, long-running work, fixed-IP packages with unlimited traffic are usually more economical.

03What should I test during the trial?

Success rate, CAPTCHA rate, median latency and pool repeat rate on your own real targets. Also ask the support team a technical question and gauge the quality of the answer.

04Is an "unlimited" package really unlimited?

On fixed-IP packages traffic is usually genuinely unlimited; the limits are on speed and concurrency. If a residential pool claims to be "unlimited", always read the written cap in the fair use policy.

05Why are cheap proxy packages risky?

A low price usually means heavy sharing and a narrow block distribution. That in turn brings shared reputation problems, a high CAPTCHA rate and the risk of being blocked en masse.
