How many people use the same IP address decides that address's fate. On a shared proxy the same address is open to dozens of customers; on a dedicated proxy it is allocated to you alone. The price gap can be 3–5x — but the real difference isn't price, it's predictability.
The Neighbor Effect
On a shared IP, the behavior of anyone else using that address hits you directly. This is called the "bad neighbor effect", and it shows up in three ways:
An illustrative narrowing. With a dedicated proxy this funnel is almost a straight line: if you bought 10 IPs, all 10 are yours.
Comparison
Never use a shared IP for anything account-related: if someone else on the same address has been flagged on that platform, your account is affected too.
Where Do Free Proxies Fit?
Addresses on free lists are sharing taken to its extreme: nobody knows how many people use them, the owner is usually unidentified and their lifetime is measured in hours. The Semi-Dedicated Option
Some providers offer "semi-dedicated" packages limited to 2–3 users. The price/performance balance is good, but they are still risky for account work: if the person you share with uses the same platform, association becomes possible.
The further down the list, the riskier sharing becomes. No proxy type is marked "strong" for payment flows — weigh proxy use carefully for that kind of work.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- How many people use this IP? (If the provider won't give a clear number, it's shared.)
- If the IP changes, is the replacement free? How many swaps do I get?
- Is there a bandwidth cap, and what is the fair use policy?
- Has it already been blocked on my target site — do you offer a trial period?
