Genshin Impact Proxy: Server Region and the Limits of Routing
In Genshin Impact, a server region is chosen when the account is created and progress is tied to that region. This page covers what that choice means, what a proxy does and does not change in this picture, the launcher download's effect on quota, and network behaviour on the co-op side.

Genshin Impact is a persistently online title that can be played with the same account on three different platforms. On PC it is installed and updated through its own launcher; on mobile it comes from the app store. On the network side one thing never changes: the world state is held on the publisher's infrastructure, not on your device.
This structure puts the proxy question somewhere different from other games. The discussion here is not "which server will I connect to", because that is determined by the choice you make when creating the account, and your exit IP does not change it. The discussion is more about scope: which traffic can be routed, where large downloads come from, and which port stays closed on a corporate network.
The sections below answer these questions in turn. To say it upfront, routing contributes little to the game experience; the real benefit is on the access, verification and network management side.
The account is tied to a region, not to a connection address
When you create an account in Genshin Impact, you choose a server region. That choice determines where your progress is held; your characters, inventory and quest status live in that region's data. Moving to a different region does not mean taking your progress with you — in practice it means starting from scratch. Co-op play is likewise possible only with players in the same region.
The conclusion is clear: changing your exit IP address does not move you to another region. A proxy is not a mechanism that determines which data set the account lives in; it only changes which network your connection comes from. Region selection sits at the account layer, the proxy at the network layer, and the two layers do not substitute for each other.
A second distinction is on the payment side. The in-game purchase flow is tied to the platform's store account; the country of that account determines the price and currency display. Trying to manage that display by changing your network address neither produces the expected result nor is free of risk on the account side. How regional price differences are examined for research purposes regional price research on game stores article.

Region selection sits at the account layer; the exit address is at the network layer, and neither substitutes for the other.
The effect of region choice on latency, and the role of routing
The largest component of the latency you feel is how far the region you connect to is from you. A player connecting from Türkiye to the European region will not have the same experience as one connecting to the Asian region; the difference comes from route length, and no network setting shortens that distance.
A proxy does not help this picture — on the contrary, it adds another hop to the traffic it routes. The request first goes to the exit, and from there reaches the destination; the return follows the same path. That is why a proxy does not reduce latency. The only exception is the rare case where your default route is unusually circuitous and the exit sits on a more direct backbone; that is not a rule but an exception that cannot be assumed without measurement. If you want to separate the components of latency proxy latency the article shows the three parts separately.
A practical note: measure against the destination. A measurement to your own exit tells you only about the first leg. What matters is the total path to the region the game connects to, and it is not possible to see that fully with a single tool. For an approximate idea the ping test repeat it at different times.
In long sessions a second variable comes into play: the exit's load at that moment. On a shared pool, the picture in the evening is not the same as in the morning. Measuring an exit in at least two different time slots before putting it into continuous use eliminates from the outset the uncertainty later described as "sometimes good, sometimes bad".
The launcher download: where does the package come from, and how does it eat quota?
On PC the game is installed and updated through its own launcher. The launcher works like a download manager: it fetches version information, pulls the required packages from the distribution infrastructure, verifies them and applies them to the local files. Because this traffic flows in request-response form over TCP, it is technically possible for it to pass through a proxy.
Being possible and being sensible are not the same thing. This title's update packages are large, and if you are using a pool that sells metered transfer, a single version change can eat a significant part of your monthly budget. The rule is simple: do the large download over your normal line and enable routing after the download is finished. If you want to work out the numbers in advance bandwidth calculation article is sufficient.
A second detail is distribution node selection. Download infrastructures try to select a node close to the client, and that selection usually depends on where domain name resolution is performed. If resolution happens on your network, a node close to you may be returned, but because the connection is established from the proxy's country the download takes an unnecessary detour. The reverse also happens: if the proxy does the resolution, the node is chosen close to the exit. In both cases the download speed can fall short of your expectation.
On mobile there is no launcher; the version comes from the store app and the game downloads additional asset packages on first launch. In most setups the store download does not read the system proxy setting, while the game's own download may. This duality explains why quota measurements keep coming out wrong.

In co-op play several players meet in the same world. The critical question here is: where is the world state held? Genshin Impact is a persistently online service and sessions run over the publisher's infrastructure. That is, the host's computer does not act as a server; the clients talk to the service's authority.
This distinction moves the NAT discussion of peer-to-peer games away from here. In the peer-to-peer model, two players use a method called hole punching to reach each other: both sides send packets outward, a temporary mapping is created in the address translation table, and the other side's packet enters through that mapping. With strict translation types this does not work and the connection falls back to a relay server. In a model that runs over the service, the connection is already established in the outbound direction, so this problem is not experienced in the same way.
What does a proxy add to the picture? A second address translation layer. Your traffic leaves from behind your own router and then emerges from the exit's address as well; if you are using a mobile pool, the carrier-side layer is added on top. For outbound connections this usually causes no problem, but it can cause sessions with no data flowing for a long time to drop sooner. The conceptual distinction between translation and routing the difference between a proxy and NAT the article draws clearly.
The practical upshot: do not label the disconnects you experience in co-op play as a "NAT type" issue straight away. First check whether the same behaviour persists without the proxy; if it does, the cause is not your network configuration but your line itself or the distance to the region.
Where the world is hosted: official infrastructure and community claims
In some games, communities can set up their own servers; the developer publishes the server software and players run a world with their own rules. That model is specific to titles whose server software is distributed, and is a matter of choice.
Genshin Impact does not fall into this group. It runs as a closed service: world state, account data and progress are held only on the publisher's infrastructure. Unofficial "private server" claims circulating on the internet are against the terms of service, are not compatible with current content, and usually require installing client files from unknown sources — which is a direct security risk. A proxy does not change this picture; a routing rule cannot determine where the game is hosted.
The legitimate and widespread structures on the community side are different: Discord servers, wikis, event calendars, help channels. These relate to players' communication rather than the game's infrastructure, and access to them can be blocked from a corporate network. What is needed in that case is access to those side services, not to the game itself.
In a corporate network scenario the right approach is transparency: reporting the access requirement to the network administrator is both more durable and safer than writing rules on your own. To tell block types apart access blocks on school and workplace networks article.

Each intermediate layer adds another address translation; it causes no problem on outbound connections but can shorten session lifetime.
Three platforms, three separate setup points
On PC, routing can be applied in two places. A system-wide setting affects all applications and has the broadest scope; on the other hand your email client and update services also leave through the tunnel. An app-based rule covers only the process you select and has few side effects. To see where the system setting sits Windows proxy settings the article is a sufficient starting point.
On mobile the setting is under the wireless network's properties and applies only to that network. When the device switches to cellular data, the rule is silently disabled. Moreover, the game client is not obliged to read the system setting; apps that carry their own network stack establish the connection directly.
On consoles the situation is more limited. Console network settings may include a proxy field, but that field usually covers only certain traffic and does not provide reliable routing for the whole game. If you are looking for a permanent solution on a console, the right place is the network's exit point, not the device itself.

What should be verified after setup?
Rather than assuming the setup works, test three things. The first is the exit address: query your address from a browser on the same network and compare it with the result without the proxy. The second is domain name resolution: if you do not know where resolution is performed, you will meet surprises on download node selection and on the privacy side. The third is liveness: is the exit really responding?
Doing these three checks with separate tools makes diagnosis easier. For the exit address my IP address, for domain name resolution DNS leak test, and for whether the exit is responding proxy checker tool is sufficient. Note the results down; a week later, instead of saying "it was working yesterday", you will have a record you can compare against.
The fourth check, and the one most often skipped, is on the IPv6 side. If your exit is IPv4 only but IPv6 is enabled on your device, requests to destinations reachable over IPv6 can bypass the proxy entirely. The symptom is insidious: no error appears, the page opens, the setup looks like it is working — but the address the destination sees is your real address.
Finally, remember the logging side. On encrypted connections the proxy cannot read the content, but which domain you connected to and when can be visible at the exit. For this reason the provider's logging policy is not a technical detail but a direct privacy decision; the framework of the topic proxy logs and privacy article.
Cases where routing genuinely helps
If you play from your own line, connecting to your account's usual region, a proxy contributes nothing. The intervening layer increases latency, consumes quota and makes diagnosis harder when a problem appears. Accepting that sentence is the shortest way to avoid drawing out the search for a solution with unnecessary experiments.
A few scenarios, on the other hand, genuinely make sense. Testing the accessibility of the game and its side services on a corporate or campus network produces a concrete output for the network administrator. Verifying how the publisher's announcement pages, event calendar or promotional content look in different countries is routine work on the localisation and community management side. Leaving from a static and known address in long sessions makes access logs predictable.
If you want to compare the picture in other online titles of a similar structure using proxies in MMORPG games the article covers server region, session consistency and download volume within the same framework. Genshin Impact and proxies: questions and answers
01Can I move my account to another server region by using a proxy?
No. Region selection is held at the account layer and your progress is tied to that region's data. Your exit IP address is at the network layer; it changes where your connection comes from, not where the account lives.
02Should I run patch downloads through the proxy?
If you are using a pool that sells metered transfer, no. Update packages are large and a single version change can consume a significant share of your monthly quota. It is more economical to do the download over your normal line and enable routing afterwards.
03My connection drops in co-op play — should I adjust a NAT setting?
Because sessions run over the service's infrastructure, the NAT type problem of the peer-to-peer model is not experienced in the same way. The common cause of disconnects is a session with no data flowing for a long time timing out in the address translation table.
04Are unofficial community servers safe?
This title runs as a closed service and the world state is held only on the publisher's infrastructure. Claims of unofficial servers are against the terms of service and usually require installing files from unknown sources; that is a direct security risk.
05Can I set a proxy on a console?
Console network settings may include a proxy field, but its scope is narrow and variable; it does not reliably route all of the game's traffic. If you are looking for a permanent solution for a console, the right layer is the network's exit point, not the device.
06If my region is far away, will a proxy improve latency?
No — on the contrary, it lengthens the path for the routed traffic. The main component of the latency you feel is the geographic distance of the region, and no network setting shortens that distance.
07Why does my download speed drop when the proxy is on?
Distribution infrastructures try to select a node close to the client, and that selection depends on where domain name resolution is performed. If the node is chosen close to you but the connection is established from the exit's country, the download takes an unnecessary detour.
08Can the proxy provider see my game account?
On encrypted connections the content cannot be read; your session details stay inside the tunnel. However, which domain you connected to, when, and with how much data can be visible at the exit. For this reason you should not move to continuous use without reading the provider's logging policy.
