Perfect World Proxy: Region Selection and Store Traffic

In games such as Perfect World, where regional versions are operated separately, the real question is not which proxy is fast but which region your account is tied to. This page covers region behaviour, the difference between web store and marketplace traffic, and the role of the distribution network in large client downloads.

Scope of the page

01
Region behaviourIs the region tied to the account, or is it only a server choice?
02
Store and marketplaceWeb store, in-game market and account page traffic.
03
Client downloadDistribution network selection on large archives and its effect on duration.
04
Managing expectationsA realistic framework for latency, quota and exit stability.

Perfect World has the structure typical of a long-lived MMORPG: a client installed on the desktop, its own updater, an account area running in the browser, and a market economy operating inside the game. Although these parts appear under the same brand, they behave differently on the network side; the proxy decision has to be built on that distinction.

Regional versions add a second layer. Versions of the same game in different regions are often operated by separate publishers, with separate account areas and separate content calendars. In that case, changing your exit country does not automatically move you to another version; it only changes where your connection appears to come from.

The sections below address these two realities separately: first the network profile of the client, then region behaviour, then the store side and setup decisions. The aim is not to give a shortcut, but to show clearly which expectations can be met.

At which stages does client traffic concentrate?

In a Perfect World installation, the distribution of transferred data is quite uneven. At the top sit the client download and large version patches; this step carries serious volume in a single pass. In the middle is the game session: traffic that flows continuously but consists of small packets. At the bottom are the store and account pages; these weigh no more than ordinary web pages.

This distribution directly determines the proxy cost. On a plan billed by transferred data, downloading the client through the proxy can consume most of your monthly quota in one step. Game sessions lasting for days, by contrast, leave no noticeable trace on the same quota. Deciding on a plan without doing quota planning produces regret with the first large patch.

The second consequence concerns diagnostics. Behind the complaint that "the proxy is slow" there is usually the download stage rather than the game session. A download is sensitive to the bandwidth of a single connection, and on a shared exit that bandwidth is divided with users other than you. A game session, on the other hand, is sensitive to continuity rather than bandwidth; judging the two by the same yardstick gives the wrong result.

The right approach is to separate the stages: do the heavy download over your normal connection and route the session and account transactions. To estimate your quota in advance, bandwidth calculation article.

The values are relative weights, not measurements: the top stage consumes most of the quota in a single pass.

Is the region tied to the account, or is it just a server list?

In games with regional versions, two different models are seen, and you cannot make a proxy decision without knowing which one you are facing. In the first model, the region is written into the account itself: you are wherever you created the account, and whatever your exit country, you connect to the same server cluster. In the second model, the region is merely a choice on the login screen, and the same account can access different server clusters.

In the first model, the function of a proxy is not to change the region. Its function lies elsewhere: influencing the stability of the path from where you are to the region server, working with a fixed exit address, or verifying how the store page looks from a different country. These are legitimate and measurable purposes; the expectation of "moving to another region" is not met.

Even in the second model, the exit country is usually not decisive on its own. Separate variables come into play, such as the country chosen during account creation, the country of the payment method and the store currency. If a version's terms of service restrict region changes, being technically possible does not mean it is appropriate; reading the terms is the user's responsibility.

Tip

The fastest way to understand region behaviour is to test without touching your account: from a different country, open only the public store and promotional pages. This check, performed without signing in, shows which content is tied to location and which to the account.

Web store, in-game market and account pages

There are three different "shopping" surfaces, and none of them substitutes for another. The web store is a page opened in the browser carrying ordinary HTTPS traffic; the proxy you define in your browser applies there. The in-game marketplace, by contrast, operates through the client's own session; your browser setting has no effect there. Account pages are also on the web side, but since they contain passwords and security settings they require separate care.

In the web store, the visible effect of a proxy is the presentation of prices and currency. In stores with regional pricing, the currency the page opens in can change according to the visitor's location. The correct use here is not to seek an economic advantage, but to verify how campaign and content presentation differs by region. When you reach the payment step, the country of the payment method and the region registered to the account come into play; these cannot be changed with a proxy and should not be attempted. For an overview of the topic, regional price research on game stores.

The in-game marketplace is an entirely different category. Transactions there flow inside the game session; the proxy only changes which address the session comes from, it does not touch the transaction itself. Collecting market data in bulk, placing automated bids or similar actions may conflict with the game's terms of use; this page does not recommend such use.

On account pages, security comes first. Before changing your exit address, enable two-step verification and make sure your recovery e-mail is accessible. A first login from a new location will most likely request additional verification; being caught unprepared means temporarily losing access to your own account.

Which node does the distribution network give you on large downloads?

Client and patch files are usually served through a content distribution network. In such a network, which node is returned to you is determined by looking at where the domain name query comes from. When using a proxy, this detail is directly reflected in download time.

If your own network resolves the domain name, the distribution network picks a node close to you; but since the proxy establishes the connection, the data goes first to the proxy's country and from there to you. The result is a path that is "close" on paper but roundabout in practice. If the proxy resolves the domain name (with the socks5h notation in SOCKS5, and in an HTTP proxy with CONNECT the proxy already resolves it), the node is also selected close to the proxy and the path becomes consistent.

SetupWho resolves the domain name?Selected nodePractical takeaway
HTTP proxy, CONNECTProxyClose to the proxyConsistent path, predictable duration
SOCKS5, socks5hProxyClose to the proxyConsistent path, the DNS query does not leak out
SOCKS5, local resolutionYour networkClose to youThe data still returns via the proxy, the path lengthens
Proxy offYour networkClose to youThe shortest path, the exit address does not change

The recommendation that follows is clear: if you can do the heavy download without a proxy, do so. If you must download through the proxy, choose a configuration that leaves domain name resolution to the proxy and schedule the download outside peak hours. To see where resolution takes place, DNS leak test is a practical check.

Setup decisions: protocol, scope and exit type

On the protocol side, the choice is simple. For store and account transactions running in the browser, an HTTP proxy is more than sufficient; HTTPS pages are tunnelled with CONNECT and the proxy cannot read the content. If you are also going to route the game client, SOCKS5 is a more flexible foundation, because it does not try to interpret the protocol it carries and does not interfere with the application's own flow.

The scope side produces more errors. A system-wide setting affects processes that read the system's proxy definition; desktop game clients may not see that definition. A browser profile covers only that window. Application-based routing, on the other hand, targets exactly the process you select and is the most reliable path when a game client is involved. Which applications work with SOCKS5 is explained with examples in the applications that support SOCKS5 article.

For the exit type decision, look at the job description. If you want a fixed address and stable speed, ISP proxy is a balanced option: it is hosted in the provider's autonomous system but operates with datacenter stability. If you are only going to check the regional appearance of public pages, datacenter proxy is the most economical path. If you need to stay close to a typical home user profile, residential proxy comes into play, but the speed of the line will not be under your control.

Connection details take the same form with every provider: proxy.example.com, port 8080, user username, password password. If you are curious about what port numbers tell you, the port numbers article provides a short framework. When deciding on a location, location list and choose an exit at a reasonable distance from both you and the target.

Post-setup checklist

Rather than assuming the setup is correct, going through five items one by one eliminates the diagnostic difficulty you would face later. The checks are independent of one another and all take a few minutes.

First, see that your exit address has genuinely changed; verify this from the browser in the same profile, not from the game client. Then check where domain name resolution takes place: if your local provider's DNS server appears while the proxy is on, the configuration is incomplete. The third step is browser-specific leaks; the WebRTC interface can work independently of the proxy setting and hand your real address to a page.

The fourth item is IPv6. If your exit speaks only IPv4 and IPv6 is enabled on your device, requests to targets reachable over IPv6 can bypass the proxy. The fifth item is exit liveness: an address being defined in the panel does not mean it is working, with the proxy checker tool tool.

Rather than doing these checks once and forgetting them, repeat them every time you change the exit. A pool update on the provider's side or a shift in the sticky window can make a setup that was correct yesterday wrong today. To measure the anonymity level, anonymity test reports whether additional headers are being added.

The five items are independent of one another; you need to go through the list from the top every time you change the exit.

Latency expectations and exit stability

A proxy adds an extra stop to your traffic, and that stop produces a time cost. Therefore using a proxy increases latency in most setups; it should not be expected to improve in-game response times. A rare exception is when your default route is unnecessarily long and the proxy connects to a more direct backbone; this is not a rule but a coincidence that must be verified by measurement.

What really matters in the MMORPG experience is variability and the frequency of disconnections. A game is playable with high but steady latency; it is unplayable with irregular spikes and sudden drops. That is why a single measurement is not enough when evaluating an exit. There is also a middle zone: the persistent online space and menu requests. These run over TCP, but depending on whether the client reads the system setting they can fall outside the scope. The only valid method here is measurement — write the rule, verify the exit address, and compare the behavior with the proxy on and off. repeat it several times during the day, preferably at the evening peak, and base your decision on the worst result.

The second component of stability is session duration. In a gateway architecture, a sticky session keeps the same exit address for a set period; when the period expires there is no warning, only the next connection being established from a different address. For a game client, this usually means the connection dropping. For that reason, choose a sticky window longer than your typical game session; how the architecture works gateway architecture is explained in that article.

Finally, expectations need to be set correctly. A proxy is not a performance tool but a routing and visibility tool. It does not shorten the path to the server, does not increase the game server's capacity, and does not change the physical distance between you and the server. It is valuable when used with an understanding of what it does and does not do; when expectations are set wrongly, it produces nothing but disappointment.

Troubleshooting order and where to start

When something does not work, the first thing to do is to reduce the problem to a layer. If the store page opens in the browser but the game does not connect, the problem is not in the proxy itself but in its scope: the client is not being routed. If neither works, the exit address is either unreachable or authentication is failing.

The second step is to isolate authentication. If you are getting a 407 response, either the credentials are not being sent at all, or the provider recognises you by IP authorisation and your home address has changed. If your panel has an authorised IP list, update it; on a connection with a dynamic IP, the username-password method holds fewer surprises.

The third step is to measure duration. If the connection is established but drops at regular intervals, the likely cause is the sticky period expiring. If the connection is never established and times out, the port may be closed or the exit disabled. If something is slow but working, look at variable shared capacity; trying a different exit gives a faster result than testing the same exit over and over.

Note

Running a VPN and a proxy at the same time makes it almost impossible to tell which layer a problem comes from. During diagnosis, bring the layers into play one at a time; cases where the two need to be used together are the exception.

Perfect World and proxies: frequently asked questions

01Can I switch to another region version with a proxy?

Not if the region is written into the account itself; changing your exit country will not move you to a different server cluster. Even when the region is only chosen on the login screen, the country of your payment method and the details registered to the account are separate variables. In every case you should read the terms of service of the version concerned.

02Does it make sense to download the client through a proxy?

Usually not. The download is the heaviest step of the installation and, on a plan billed by transferred data, it burns through a large part of your quota in one go. If you have no choice, pick a configuration that leaves domain name resolution to the proxy and schedule the download outside peak hours.

03What does it mean when I see a different currency on the store page?

It shows that the page is presenting regional content based on the visitor's location. That does not mean the same conditions will apply at purchase: at the payment step, the country of the payment method and the region registered to the account come into play. This page covers only the verification of how the page looks.

04Is the in-game marketplace affected by my browser proxy setting?

No. Marketplace transactions flow through the game client's own session; the setting you define in the browser does not cover that traffic. If you want to route the client, you need an application-based rule or a configuration that supports SOCKS5.

05Should I choose an ISP proxy or a residential proxy?

If a fixed address, stable speed and long sessions are your priority, an ISP solution is more predictable. If you have a verification task that requires you to stay close to a typical home user profile, residential is preferable; in return, the speed of the line is not under your control. The difference between the two comparison article .

06The game disconnects at regular intervals — why?

The most common cause is the sticky session timer expiring: when it runs out, the exit address changes and the client's open session drops. The second possibility is hitting the concurrent connection limit. Choosing a sticky window longer than your game session and checking the limit in the panel resolves most cases.

07Should I use a VPN and a proxy at the same time?

It is not recommended from a diagnostic standpoint. When two layers are stacked, it becomes hard to separate which one a problem comes from, and latency accumulates twice. Work with a single layer first; add the second layer deliberately only if there is a specific requirement.
