Total War Proxy: Who Hosts the Session, Where Is the Rule Written?

Total War titles spend most of their playtime offline; the network only comes into play during installation, updates, mods and multiplayer sessions. This distribution also changes the proxy decision. The page explains which requests are routed depending on where you write the rule.

What will you find on this page?

01
Hosting modelThe network-side consequences of a player-hosted session instead of a dedicated server.
02
Router settingsThe coverage, limits and side effects of writing the rule on the modem.
03
Corporate networkDiagnosing a connection from behind a filtered network and the correct step to take.
04
Volume distributionThe real weight of installation, patch and mod traffic on your quota.

In this series the network load is not spread evenly over time. A campaign can run for weeks on your own and during that time the client carries almost no data; on the other hand, the initial installation, a large patch or a mod pack coming down from the workshop produces serious volume in one go. When calculating proxy cost, these peaks are what you should look at.

The second decisive topic is the architecture of the multiplayer side. There is no dedicated server waiting for you at a given address and port; one of the players opens the session and the others join through the platform's matchmaking layer. This difference renders the sentence "let me route the proxy to the server" meaningless from the start.

Below we look first at where the traffic accumulates, then at how the session is established, and then at whether it is better to write the rule on the device or on the router.

Volume and latency do not accumulate in the same place

The installation and patch stages are large file transfers: long-running, one-way and bandwidth sensitive. What matters here is not latency but how many megabits per second you can carry. The only thing a proxy exit does at this stage is add another potential bottleneck to your line; if the exit's capacity is lower than your home line, download times get longer.

In the lobby and campaign stages the volume drops and interaction rises. In a turn-based campaign, the time between one player finishing a turn and another receiving the state is tolerant of differences of a few hundred milliseconds. In real-time battle the situation reverses: unit orders are continuously synchronised and latency is felt directly.

The mod side is a category of its own. Large packs coming down from the workshop can be as bulky as the installation and need to be downloaded before a campaign starts. If you use a metered exit, keeping these downloads outside the tunnel makes a serious difference at the end of the month.

Read together, these three observations produce this picture: where a proxy is really useful is on the download and store side; where latency matters, a proxy is not a help but an extra load.

The three rows weigh the same six stages from different angles: where the data accumulates, where latency shows, where the rule reaches.

A player opens the session; there is no dedicated server

The series' multiplayer mode does not rely on community server hosting. One player opens a session, others join through an invitation or the matchmaking list, and the continuity of the session depends on the connection of the player who opened it. When the hosting player leaves the game, the session ends; this is the most fundamental difference from titles that work with a dedicated server.

The consequence on the proxy side is direct: there is no fixed server address you can route to. The connection is established between two clients either directly or through the platform's relay layer. Trying to push such a flow through an HTTP proxy is asking for something the architecture does not support.

Mod compatibility is part of this model too. Everyone joining a session is expected to have the same version and the same set of mods; a missing pack or one with a different version prevents joining. This is not a network problem, but the symptom is confused with one: the connection appears to be established, yet joining is not completed.

A comparison with titles that have dedicated servers is instructive at this point. In a game with community server hosting there is a fixed address and a known port; the administrator can configure that machine's exit as they wish and players connect to that address from their clients. In such a structure the proxy discussion is meaningful on the server side. In the player-hosted model the server role moves to a different home every session; there is no permanent point to configure and the host's line determines the session's ceiling.

Note

In a player-hosted session, participants can see the host's public address either directly or through the platform's relay layer. From a privacy point of view this is a different situation from a game with dedicated servers; the general framework of the topic is using a proxy safe article.

Matchmaking, NAT and connections that cannot be established

For two clients to reach each other, the address translation layers in between must behave appropriately. On home networks the modem translates local addresses into a single public address; if both sides are in this situation, the party that will establish the connection is the platform's relay service. The basis of this mechanism the difference between a proxy and NAT article.

A proxy does not improve this picture. A proxy carries the outbound connections you initiate through another server; it does not let you accept a connection coming to you from outside. So the solution to problems of the "I cannot join" or "they cannot join me" type is not a proxy but your network's own configuration.

If your carrier places you behind a shared public address, the situation becomes one step more complicated. This structure is becoming increasingly common for home users and makes direct connections harder to establish. Adding a proxy on such a line does not solve the problem; the solution is either to rely on the platform's relay layer or to request a different address type from your carrier.

In short, the decision to take in this section is this: think of a proxy not as the solution to connection problems but only as a setting that determines where your outbound traffic appears to come from.

What does writing the rule on the router change?

Moving the proxy setting to the modem or router level makes the coverage as wide as possible: every device on the same network uses the same exit without additional configuration. In a household or small office working with more than one machine this requires less maintenance than configuring each one individually. Configuration paths using a proxy via the router article.

The cost of that breadth comes from the same place. The TV, console, phone and smart devices on the network also go out through the same path; if you use a metered exit, you cannot tell where the consumption comes from. Also, temporarily leaving a device outside the rule is a matter of seconds in a per-device setup, whereas here it requires defining an exception at the network level.

Where the rule is writtenScopeWhat to watch for
Router / modemEvery device on the networkQuota cannot be broken down, defining exceptions is cumbersome
Operating system settingMost applications on that machineApplications that use their own network stack do not read the setting
Application-based ruleSelected processesThe sharpest control, the most maintenance
Browser profileThat profile onlyDoes not cover game and launcher traffic

The second detail overlooked in network-level setups is name resolution. If the DNS server distributed by your router has not changed, the target domains may still be resolved on the local server while your traffic exits through the proxy. This does not produce a technical fault, but it does not give you the level of privacy you expect and it also affects which node content distribution networks choose.

The choice comes down to a single question: how many devices need to use the same exit? If the answer is one, a per-device setup is cleaner. If the answer is several and all of those devices serve the same purpose, the router level reduces the maintenance burden. A mixed setup is also possible: writing the rule only on the gaming machine without changing anything at the network level is the solution with the fewest surprises in most homes.

Connecting from behind a filtered corporate network

Workplace and campus networks generally allow outbound traffic only through the web ports and close the other ports game clients use. On such a network the symptom is usually the same: the store page opens in the browser but the client cannot connect. The reason is that the client tries a different port.

Three steps are enough to diagnose it. First, try the same credentials on another line; if it works, the problem is not with you but with the network's policy. Then confirm that the exit is up from the outside with with the proxy checker tool confirm. Finally, check whether your provider has an alternative endpoint on a commonly permitted port; that a port number does not determine the protocol port numbers is explained in that article.

Beyond this point the matter is administrative, not technical. An organisation's network policy defines not what is technically possible but what is permitted. The sustainable path is to ask the network administrator for explicit permission; the topic access blocks on school and workplace networks article.

Warning

Ignoring the usage policy of a network that does not belong to you is not a technical achievement but a contractual problem. The methods on this page are described for use on your own network and in permitted setups.

Request order: who talks to whom, and in what order?

The clearest way to see where a proxy setup comes into play is to follow the request order. The player opens the launcher, and the launcher goes out to obtain identity and version information. If a proxy is defined, this outbound request passes through the tunnel and the proxy's address is visible on the other side.

In the second step the tunnel is established. For an encrypted destination the client says CONNECT to the proxy; the proxy opens a TCP session to the destination and steps aside. From this point on the proxy cannot see the content, it only carries the bytes. In the third step the store and patch responses return through the same tunnel.

The fourth step is the critical one: the multiplayer session's own traffic does not enter this tunnel. The client either goes out directly or uses the platform's relay layer. That is why the last arrow in the diagram does not pass through the proxy column; it is also why session traffic goes over your ordinary line even when you think the setup is working correctly. The limits of SOCKS5's UDP transport method SOCKS5 UDP support .

Exit selection, quota and measurement discipline

Since the traffic covered is mainly downloads and the store, the quality to look for here is capacity. Datacenter exits offer the most suitable profile for this job, while residential packages priced by data transferred become expensive quickly on large downloads. SOCKS5 the answer to the question "SOCKS5 or HTTP" depends on which field the client you use offers.

Measure before and after setup. Downloading the same file with the proxy on and off and comparing the times says more about an exit's capacity than any marketing sentence. As for latency ping test measure at different times of day.

Watch your quota not at the start of the month but on big update days. A full installation of a title or a large mod pack can spend most of that month's allowance in one go. The concurrent connection ceiling is another overlooked item: several clients and browser tabs open at once fill the ceiling earlier than you expect. The details of the topic concurrent connection limit the article.

How many people an exit is shared with is as decisive as capacity. In a shared pool you cannot know how many sessions are open at any moment; download speed fluctuates noticeably during the day and a single measurement is misleading. On a dedicated exit you carry only the trace of your own usage, but the monthly cost rises. For a user who downloads large installations only occasionally, a shared pool is usually enough; in a setup that regularly pulls large mod packs, a dedicated exit behaves more predictably.

Finally, location: keep the exit close both to you and to the destination. Exiting from a distant country not only increases latency but also changes the language and currency of the store interface; that is not a result most users are looking for.

Setup checklist and verification

After setup, a single page opening is not sufficient proof. The short list below lets you verify in a few minutes that the coverage really is what you want.

  • Verify your exit address from the browser with the my IP address page.
  • Check where domain name resolution takes place with a separate test.
  • Download the same file with the proxy on and off and compare the times.
  • Open a multiplayer session and confirm that joining completes.
  • Note the remaining quota and the number of concurrent connections from the panel.

The format of access credentials is the same with every provider: hostname, port and, if required, username and password. proxy.example.com and 8080 Values like these only show where the fields go; the real details are in your panel and are not to be shared.

If something is not working as you expect, question the coverage first: where did you write the rule, and does that point cover the process in question? Changing the protocol or the provider without answering this question does nothing but prolong the diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions about Total War and proxies

01Can I host a Total War multiplayer session through a proxy?

In practice, no. The session opens on one player's client and joining runs through the platform's matchmaking layer; there is no fixed server address you can route to. A proxy reaches not that flow but the launcher and store requests.

02My friend cannot join the session, will a proxy solve it?

No. A proxy carries the outbound connections you initiate; it does not let you accept an incoming connection. The source of such problems is usually address translation layers and version or mod incompatibility.

03Is it better to configure the proxy on the modem or on the computer?

If more than one device will use the same exit, the router level reduces the maintenance burden. For a single machine, a per-device setup is cleaner, because you can see where the quota goes and easily leave an application outside the coverage.

04Should I download mods through the tunnel?

If you use a metered exit, usually not. Large mod packs can be as bulky as the installation and can consume your monthly allowance in one go. Unless you have an unmetered, high-capacity exit, leave downloads on your ordinary connection.

05The store opens on the work network but the game will not connect, why?

The browser uses the web ports, while the client tries a different port. If the network only permits the web ports, this picture emerges. To diagnose it, try the same credentials on another line and look for the difference in the network policy.

06Does a proxy reduce stutters during battle?

Do not expect it to. The extra stop in between lengthens the total path and latency usually increases. Moreover, because session traffic stays outside the tunnel in most setups, the proxy never touches that flow.

07Which protocol should I choose?

Look at which field the client you use offers. If it only has an HTTP proxy field, your SOCKS5 exit will not work there. For encrypted destinations an HTTP proxy also establishes a CONNECT tunnel, so in both cases the content cannot be read by the proxy.

08My download speed dropped with the proxy, is that normal?

Yes, it can be. If the exit's capacity is lower than your home line, or the pool is busy at that hour, downloads take longer. Downloading the same file with the proxy on and off and comparing the times will show this within a few minutes.
